San Diegans now have more opportunities for outdoor activities with the opening of a new active recreation area at Waterfront Park. Located in the northeast corner of the park, this facility will be accessible daily from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Equipment check-out will operate from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. during summer hours and from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. from fall to spring.
The new amenities aim to promote an active lifestyle for all community members, including those who may not afford gym memberships or local sports programs, by offering free access to equipment and features. Drought-tolerant trees and plants surround the 1.25-acre recreation area, enhancing ambiance, supporting environmental sustainability measures, and buffering sound from sports activities.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held by the County’s Department of Parks and Recreation along with Board of Supervisors Vice Chair Terra Lawson-Remer to mark the opening of the area. The event also featured an interactive pickleball workshop following the ceremony.
