Teams of volunteers have been distributing information in South County neighborhoods affected by sewage pollution from the Tijuana River Valley. This initiative aims to prepare residents for a community health assessment led by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) at the end of October.

The volunteers visited approximately 6,000 households near the polluted river valley. They provided details about the survey process, known as a Community Assessment for Public Health Emergency Response or CASPER. This method seeks to gather first-hand insights into how sewage spills and odors are affecting local health and lifestyles.

Data collected from this assessment will assist local leaders in understanding community health concerns and planning subsequent actions in response to the ongoing crisis.

County officials are broadening their health-focused response to address the sewage crisis in the Tijuana River Valley. Efforts include improving communication with beachgoers through a new warning category.

Other updates from San Diego County include ballots being sent out for the presidential general election, new hires in government affairs and communications, and an extension of the Rural Health Discharge Program.
