County shelter pets in San Diego are getting into the Halloween spirit early this year, donning costumes as they seek new homes. Costumed animals include a "harey" witch, a lettuce vampire, two jack-o-lanterns, a fairy, King Meow II, a cowboy, and a pirate.
In an effort to encourage adoptions or fostering during the spooky season, County Animal Services is offering free pet adoptions for those who mention seeing the costumed animals on a County site. All adopted animals will be spayed or neutered and come with vaccinations, a microchip, and for dogs in the service area, a one-year license.
Potential adopters can visit County Animal Services’ Adoptions page to view available pets which include cats, dogs, pigs, guinea pigs, roosters, as well as a rabbit, tortoise and chinchilla. The staff suggests choosing multiple options since some animals may already be selected by others.
For those unsure about adoption commitment but willing to help temporarily house an animal can consider fostering. Fostering allows pets to experience home life and provides them with basic care supplies such as food and bedding.
The shelters are open for walk-ins from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday at both their South Shelter in Bonita and North Shelter in Carlsbad locations.
County Animal Services focuses on ensuring animal welfare through education and compassionate care while promoting responsible pet ownership.
