San Diego County has released its 2023 annual Crop Report, detailing the economic contributions and trends in local agriculture. The report highlights that nursery and cut flower products account for 71% of the total agricultural value, with bedding plants, color, perennials, cacti, and succulents leading for the third consecutive year. These categories brought in $396,623,341, representing 24% of the county's agricultural production value.

Ornamental trees and shrubs are the second most valuable group at $383,114,393 or 23% of the region’s overall agricultural production value. Despite a decline in total production value to $1.66 billion—approximately $120 million less than in 2022—the report notes some positive changes.

Field crops saw a 14% increase in value to $4,489,288 due to expanded acreage. Apiary products also experienced a significant rise of 47%, reaching $4,749,866. This was primarily driven by a 264% increase in honey and beeswax production attributed to increased rainfall.

The report acknowledges ongoing challenges such as inclement weather and rising water costs but emphasizes San Diego's strong agricultural presence with over 4,000 farms—94% being family-owned—and its top rankings in nursery-related categories both statewide and nationally.

The County’s Department of Agriculture, Weights and Measures (AWM) plays a crucial role through various programs aimed at supporting food supply sustainability and public health. In response to regional emergencies like extraordinary rains and mudslides estimated to cause $90 million in damage this year, AWM participated actively in recovery efforts.

The Crop Report is available online with translation options for broader accessibility.
