Dr. Janette J. Gray and her former medical practice, The Center for Health & Wellbeing in San Diego, have agreed to a $3.8 million settlement over allegations of submitting false claims to Medicare and TRICARE. The claims suggest that from 2012 to 2022, Dr. Gray's practice billed these programs for services not covered by misrepresenting the provider or service, "unbundling" procedures, or billing for unnecessary services.
As part of the settlement, Dr. Gray will be excluded from participating in Medicare, Medicaid, and other federal health care programs for five years.
U.S. Attorney Tara McGrath stated: “There’s no price tag on the integrity of our healthcare system.” Bryan D. Denny from the Department of Defense Office of Inspector General added that this civil settlement holds Dr. Gray accountable for actions that cost taxpayers millions.
FBI San Diego Acting Special Agent Houtan Moshrefi emphasized their commitment to addressing violations within the American healthcare system.
The resolution was achieved through collaboration between various government agencies including the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of California and was managed by Assistant U.S. Attorney Maritsa A. Flaherty.
This case highlights ongoing efforts to combat healthcare fraud using tools like the False Claims Act. Allegations resolved by this settlement remain unproven as there has been no determination of liability.
