The flu season is approaching with the winter months, and it is essential to take measures to protect against influenza. Each year, millions in the United States fall ill due to the flu, and some of the most vulnerable individuals succumb to it. In San Diego, an average of 20,381 people contracted the flu annually between fiscal years 2022-2024, with 54 fatalities recorded.
Health officials emphasize that receiving a flu vaccine is the most effective method for preventing illness from the virus. The vaccine is particularly crucial for those at high risk of developing complications from influenza. It is advised that everyone aged six months and older receive a flu shot. In the last fiscal year alone, over 1,050,000 residents in San Diego received their vaccinations.
San Diego County provides access to flu vaccines through its Public Health Centers located throughout the region. Additionally, during October and November each year, the county organizes events known as "flu points of dispensing," or PODs, which deliver up to 200 doses of flu vaccines daily within local communities.
In the coming weeks, three more flu PODs will be available for those seeking immunization. These sessions allow individuals to walk in without prior appointments and receive their flu shots at no cost.
