A new affordable housing community, Vista Azul, has officially opened in Carlsbad. This development provides 70 units for low-income individuals and families. Located near the intersection of Aviara Parkway and Palomar Airport Road, Vista Azul offers a range of apartment options: 32 one-bedroom, 19 two-bedroom, and 18 three-bedroom apartments, along with one manager’s unit. These homes are available to those earning between 30% and 60% of the Area Median Income.

The complex includes amenities such as a community room with free wifi and kitchen facilities, a teen room, a common laundry area, outdoor BBQ and picnic areas, a play structure with a tot lot, and a bocce ball court. The location is convenient to retail shops, employment opportunities, and schools.

David Estrella, County Housing and Community Development Services Director, emphasized the importance of this development: “There is a critical need for affordable housing and I am proud of our partnership with the City of Carlsbad to make this grand opening possible. The residents here at Vista Azul will have housing security and that leads to better health and educational outcomes.”

Vista Azul is developed by BRIDGE Housing through both private and public partnerships. It received $1.3 million in HOME Investment Partnerships Funding from HUD administered by San Diego County.

Since 2017, San Diego County has invested over $314 million in affordable housing projects using various funding sources including excess land sales, its Innovative Housing Trust Fund, state funds, federal contributions, and local resources. These efforts have facilitated nearly 2,500 homes with plans for an additional 3,100 units.
