Senate Minority Leader Brian Jones has voiced criticism over a special session convened by Governor Gavin Newsom. In his statement, Jones described the session as an unnecessary political maneuver.
"Californians have made it clear: affordability is their top concern," said Jones. He criticized Governor Newsom for allegedly providing the Attorney General with excessive resources to engage in disputes with the federal government while California faces significant challenges.
Jones labeled the special session as "just another political stunt," suggesting it was an attempt to divert attention from recent electoral losses suffered by Democrats in various state and federal races. He highlighted that despite these setbacks, there are pressing issues such as impending gas price increases, which he attributes to decisions made by Newsom’s Air Resources Board.
According to Jones, "If Governor Newsom truly cared about protecting Californians, he wouldn’t be price gouging them at the pump while chasing the spotlight for himself." He also questioned the necessity of a special session given that regular sessions are already scheduled.
Jones accused Newsom of using his role to enhance his profile for a potential presidential run in 2028. He urged the governor to focus on managing California rather than pursuing broader political ambitions. "Newsom needs to remember he has two years left on his commitment to run California," stated Jones.
