Dozens of individuals and families with incomes up to 80% of the area median income are now moving into Estrella, a new affordable housing development in San Marcos. The project is a collaboration between the City of San Marcos, Affirmed Housing Group, and others, with funding support from the County. The County contributed $2.64 million from the HOME program, which provides federal funds from the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) for affordable housing initiatives.

David Estrella, director of the County’s Housing and Community Development Services, stated, “The County is all in on increasing affordable housing across our region.” He emphasized that having affordable housing options throughout the region enables families to live near schools and recreational areas, fostering community growth.

The Estrella development replaces the old Mariposa Apartments site with two new complexes: Alora and Estrella. Together they offer 196 affordable units. Construction began in April 2023.

Since 2017, San Diego County has invested over $314 million in affordable housing projects through various funding sources. This investment has resulted in nearly 2,500 homes being made available, with an additional 3,100 units planned.
