Flu cases are increasing in San Diego County, with 116 cases reported last week compared to 77 the previous week. So far this year, there have been 1,209 cases, up from 733 at the same time last flu season. Wastewater testing data starting in late October 2024 has shown a rise in influenza virus detection.
“We are going to have a busy flu season. With holiday gatherings approaching it is especially important to be vigilant by covering your cough, washing your hands and getting vaccinated against the flu,” said Dr. Ankita Kadakia, interim County public health officer. “Additionally, whenever possible, it is important to refrain from going to any gathering when you know you are sick.”
The flu vaccine remains the best protection against the virus but has also generated some myths that need addressing:
- Myth #1: The flu isn’t that serious; I don’t need the vaccine.
- Myth #2: The flu vaccine will give me the flu.
- Myth #3: I had the vaccine and still got the flu, so it doesn’t work.
For more information on respiratory viruses like flu, COVID-19, and RSV in the region, residents can refer to the Respiratory Viruses Surveillance report published by the County Health and Human Services Agency.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends everyone aged six months and older receive an annual flu shot. It is possible to get both a flu and COVID-19 vaccination simultaneously; however, these vaccines do not protect against each other's respective viruses.
The influenza vaccine is crucial for those at higher risk of serious complications from the virus. It is available at doctors' offices and retail pharmacies covered by medical insurance. Uninsured individuals can get vaccinated at one of six county public health centers or local community clinics.
