San Diego County Probation hosted the annual Shop with a Cop event on December 7, bringing holiday cheer to over 300 children selected by local schools. San Diego Chief Probation Officer Tamika Nelson expressed her department's enthusiasm for the event, stating, "As the Probation Chief, I can tell you our officers and staff participate in this event every year because it brings them so much joy to be part of this special day for the children in our communities."
The initiative, which began in 1994, involves more than 300 officers from over 30 law enforcement agencies across San Diego County. Officers volunteer their time to engage with children during this festive occasion. The event is supported by local law enforcement agencies along with sponsors such as SeaWorld, Target, and STAR/PAL.
Children participating in the event are paired with law enforcement officers and treated to breakfast and a dolphin show at SeaWorld. Following these activities, they travel together to Target where each child receives a $200 gift card for shopping. Volunteers assist by wrapping gifts that the children select for themselves and their families.
Andy Wiese, Interim CEO for STAR/PAL, praised the efforts of San Diego County Probation as hosts: “We thought Probation did an absolutely amazing job as the host agency for Shop with a Cop! Their organization, dedication, and enthusiasm truly made the event special for the kids and the community.”
The hosting responsibilities will transition to El Cajon Police Department for next year's event.
