With heavy rains forecasted for San Diego County this week, local authorities are taking measures to help residents prepare. The County and CAL FIRE are offering free sandbags to those living in unincorporated areas.
San Diego County has experienced a relatively dry winter so far, but conditions are expected to change with the anticipated downpour. Emergency services and public works road crews advise residents to stay alert, take necessary precautions, and drive carefully during adverse weather conditions.
To assist residents in protecting their properties from potential flooding and erosion, the County and CAL FIRE have made sandbags available at various fire stations. Residents should call ahead to confirm availability and bring a shovel for filling the bags themselves.
Flooding can occur when rainwater causes runoff that sweeps away topsoil, mud, plant material, and debris. This can lead to damage of homes, clogging of culverts and storm drains, as well as roadways being flooded or damaged.
Residents are encouraged to visit AlertSanDiego.org for guidance on emergency preparedness. A helpful video titled “You’ve Got Your Sandbags, Now What?” is also available online to demonstrate how to properly fill and use sandbags effectively.
