Rep. Scott Peters, a congressman representing California's 50th district, has shared his insights on the current economic situation via social media, discussing the impact of tariffs on various sectors of the economy.

On April 4, 2025, Peters expressed concern about the potential effects of recent tariffs. He stated, "This might just be the beginning: If the tariffs, which are in effect the biggest U.S. tax rise since at least the 1950s, cause the economy to shrink, stocks and yields still have a long way to go down."

In a consecutive tweet, published on the same date, Peters highlighted the immediate impact on U.S. manufacturers by noting, "In the short run, U.S. manufacturers are going to hurt from these tariffs, and whether they lead to more jobs in the long term is an open question."

Addressing the broader economic and social effects, Peters stated in another post, "U.S. drinkers will pay more for cocktails, champagne and foreign beers, brands will disappear from bar menus and jobs will be lost on both sides of the Atlantic as a result of U.S. President Donald Trump's reciprocal tariffs, drinks industry bodies and analysts said on."
