According to Navy officials, a sailor from the San Diego-based aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt is missing and presumed dead after reportedly falling overboard off the southern California coastline.

ABC 10 News reported that Navy officials began search and rescue efforts after a lookout noticed what they believed to be a person in the water at approximately 7:30 a.m. on Thursday Dec. 10.

One sailor was unaccounted for during a command-wide roll call and the sailor’s parents later identified him as 20-year-old Ethan Goolsby of San Antonio, Texas, Scripps affiliate KSAT reports. Goolsby reported to the USS Theodore Roosevelt in July following initial training as an Aviation Ordnanceman in Pensacola, Florida. He was promoted to his current rank of Aviation Ordnanceman Airman Apprentice on Sept. 16.

Helicopters and a Rigid Hull Inflatable Boat were launched to assist in the efforts. The U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Navy aircraft, USS Bunker Hill, USS Russell, USS Howard and USS Charleston also assisted with the rescue efforts.

Crews searched more than 607 square nautical miles for more than 55 hours before calling off the rescue mission. The Navy notified the sailor's family before the stopping the search.

The Navy has since updated the sailor's status to "deceased."

"The loss of our sailor is felt deeply by all on board," Capt. Eric Anduze, commanding officer of Theodore Roosevelt said in a statement. "The entire Theodore Roosevelt team sends our deepest condolences to the family of our missing shipmate."

Rear Admiral and commander of Carrier Strike Group Nine Doug Verissimo added that the strike group, "sends our thoughts and prayers to the family and loved ones of our missing shipmate. I offer my thanks to all the Sailors and Coast Guardsmen who were involved in the search."

According to USNI News, the USS Theodore Roosevelt departed San Diego on Dec. 7 for a sustainment exercise before its eventual second deployment this year.

The ship is set to change its homeport from San Diego to Bremerton, Washington, and is scheduled for an overhaul in 2021.
