Online pledge to teach controversial Critical Race Theory signed by 1 Los Angeles teachers by week ending Jan. 22, a rise of 1

Hs 06

Critical Race Theory will be taught by one more teacher in Los Angeles, according to an online pledge from the Zinn Education Project.

The pledge was signed by 73 teachers the week before. It now has 85 pledges from Los Angeles teachers by the end of the week ending Jan. 22.

They’re one of the thousands of US teachers pledging to continue educating students about the controversial Critical Race Theory, which explains racism is embedded in US culture and politics.

The new Los Angeles teacher wrote “I don't want the truth to disappear.” when pledging to teach Critical Race Theory.

Though the concept was first suggested in the late 70’s, it has recently exploded as a contentious issue between the American right and left in the last two years.

Many who signed the pledge are defying state bans on the teachings. Arizona, Idaho, Iowa, New Hampshire, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas have passed legislation banning discussions about the US being inherently racist.

Other states, such as Montana and South Dakota, have denounced the teachings without passing specific legislation.

In an interview with The Washington Free Beacon, Ashley Varner of the Freedom Foundation accused the Zinn Education Project of providing “left-leaning propaganda to teachers.”

My Linh LeMy students deserve and want to learn true history. We can't fight systems of oppression until we learn the origins of these systems and how they continue to enforce White Supremacy, especially when they are being enforced through laws. We need to learn about those who showed resistance, resilience, and empowerment during times when they were being oppressed. We need to see that protests, marches, rebellions, happened long before we were born so we can learn from those who fought before us, and we can continue the fight for social justice for all. Learning our true history can be hard, but forgetting it or lying about it would be wrong, as well as devastating to change and progress.
