The County of San Diego recently commenced its 39th Annual Blood Drive, aiming to address the crucial need for blood donations in hospitals. The initiative, which began outside the County Administration Center, was highlighted by Chief Medical Officer Eric McDonald stressing the significance of both donating blood and ensuring diversity among donors.
"We don’t have to look far to find someone we know in need of blood. My mother needed a transfusion, and we are thankful to blood donors who made it possible for her to be here with us today," stated Dr. McDonald.
The annual blood drive, organized for almost four decades, plays a vital role in supporting blood banks that often face shortages. Emphasizing the importance of a diverse blood pool, Dr. McDonald explained how specific blood types and surface proteins unique to certain groups can reduce the likelihood of adverse reactions during transfusions.
In a bid to encourage regional donations, the County collaborated with the San Diego Blood Bank last year to establish the Community Guardians Program, dedicated to promoting and expanding blood donations. The County drive, conducted in partnership with the San Diego Blood Bank, is among the largest and most successful collection events organized by the organization.
Individuals interested in contributing can participate in the blood drives at various County locations, including the County Administration Center, Fallbrook Community Center, Julian Library, County Operations Center, and several other sites across San Diego County.
The annual blood drive serves as a critical platform for community members, including non-County employees, to unite in supporting a common cause and making a life-saving difference through blood donations.
