San Diego County News Center - Feb 15, 2024 - A new mixed-use affordable housing development named SkyLINE has broken ground in Rancho Bernardo. The project, located steps away from the Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) station on George Cooke Express Drive, aims to provide 100 new one-to-three-bedroom apartments for families and individuals.
According to the County News Center, SkyLINE is a collaborative effort, as stated by the article, "SkyLINE is the result of public and private partnerships that include the County, the City of San Diego, MTS, and Affirmed Housing." The development received funding support from various sources, with the County’s Innovative Housing Trust Fund contributing $2 million towards the initiative.
The affordability of the housing units is a key focus, with the report mentioning, "homes in the development will remain affordable for the next 70 years." The development will offer amenities such as indoor and outdoor common spaces, play areas for children, a barbeque station, a learning center, a computer room, and two laundry rooms.
Since 2017, the County has made significant investments in affordable housing, totaling over $281 million. This initiative has already seen the opening of more than 2,000 units, with an additional 3,183 units in progress. Upon completion of all ongoing projects, the County aims to support over 9,500 affordable housing units, benefiting close to 21,000 individuals.
The development aligns with the County’s Housing Blueprint, which serves as a guide and response to the regional housing crisis. Those interested in learning more about SkyLINE can find additional information on the Affirmed website.
The efforts towards affordable housing in Rancho Bernardo reflect a broader commitment by the County to address housing challenges and provide sustainable solutions for the community.
