On Tuesday, the County of San Diego launched its 40th annual blood drive, in collaboration with the San Diego Blood Bank, marking one of the region's largest donor events. This year, the County has expanded the drive to include 24 locations, with a goal of collecting 501 pints of blood, surpassing last year's donation of 435 pints.

"The blood donated saves lives," emphasized Board of Supervisors Chairwoman Nora Vargas, highlighting the critical need for blood in various medical situations. Health and Human Services Agency Interim Director Dr. Eric McDonald shared a personal story, stating, "I got a phone call and knew in that moment my mother needed to get to a hospital immediately. Those doctors and the blood transfusion she received made it possible for her to be with us today."

Dr. McDonald also stressed the importance of diverse blood donations, stating, "Certain blood types and surface proteins are unique to specific groups," and how matching donors' ethnic backgrounds can reduce the risk of adverse reactions during transfusions.

County Assistant Chief Medical Officer Dr. Jennifer Tuteur commended the Community Guardians Program, which encourages blood donations and has seen participation from various organizations in San Diego. San Diego Blood Bank CEO Doug Morton highlighted the constant need for blood, mentioning, "The San Diego Blood Bank currently is low on most types and must collect more than 350 pints of blood every day just to meet our region’s growing need for blood and blood products."

The County's dedication to supporting the local blood supply extends beyond its employees, with individuals like Mary-Huyen, Cecilia, and Sara experiencing firsthand the life-saving impact of blood donations. The public, including non-County employees, are encouraged to participate in the blood drives scheduled at various County locations throughout April.

The annual blood drive serves as a testament to the community's commitment to saving lives and supporting those in need through the selfless act of blood donation.
