San Diego County News Center reports that adoption fees will be waived for all pets on Saturday, June 1, at the County’s two animal shelters in Bonita and Carlsbad. This initiative is part of the first annual California Adopt-a-Pet Day, aiming to address overcrowding in shelters across the United States.
"Unleash your love and find your new family member," stated a representative from the County Communications Office. The event highlights the bond between humans and animals, encouraging community members to make a lifesaving impact on homeless pets.
The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), in partnership with CalAnimals, will cover adoption fees. All adopted pets will be vaccinated, spayed or neutered, and microchipped. For residents within the County service area who adopt a dog, a license is included.
Prospective adopters can browse online listings for available cats, dogs, bunnies, a tortoise, a guinea pig, and pigs. Due to high demand during this special event, Animal Services staff recommend selecting multiple potential pets as backups.
For those unable to visit on June 1st, adoption fees are always waived for senior adopters, senior pets, and pets that have been waiting over 30 days for a home. Walk-in hours are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday at both shelter locations: South Shelter at 5821 Sweetwater Road in Bonita and North Shelter at 2481 Palomar Airport Road in Carlsbad.
The County Communications Office can be contacted via email at communications@sdcounty.ca.gov or by phone at 619-595-4633.
