San Diego County Supervisors have agreed to secure a construction contract for a project aimed at improving water quality in the unincorporated area of Fallbrook. The Green Street project, located along South Mission Road between Grand Tradition Way and Pepper Tree Lane, is designed to support watershed protection and sustainability by filtering stormwater.
The planned work includes installing a trash capture device beneath the road and a biofiltration basin that will enhance the landscaping above it. The trash capture device is intended to remove trash, sediment, and debris, while the biofiltration basin will target bacteria and nutrients from stormwater before they enter the San Luis Rey River.
In 2022, the Department of Public Works (DPW) published the Green Streets Clean Water Plan with the primary goal of protecting the environment and improving water quality. As part of this plan, South Mission Road (North Segment) was selected out of 30 ranked projects due to its potential benefits for water quality, environmental impact, community advantages, and cost-effectiveness.
The County employs various tools to prioritize stormwater improvement projects in underserved areas. Upon completion, this initiative aims to reduce bacteria, trash, and other pollutants in local waterways.
This project aligns with the County’s sustainability goals of safeguarding natural resources while enhancing the natural environment for residents and visitors. The total cost is estimated at $3 million with construction slated to begin in late 2024 and finish by summer 2025.
