Senate Minority Leader Brian Jones has named Paula Jansen and Tony Teravainen as the Senate District 40 "Veterans of the Year." In a statement, Jones remarked, "Paula Jansen and Tony Teravainen exemplify the spirit of service, both in and out of uniform. After their honorable service in the U.S. Navy, they channeled their dedication into community service, uplifting fellow veterans, and fostering positive change."

Paula Jansen from Lakeside served as Chief Petty Officer in the U.S. Navy. She is currently the Junior Vice Commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Department of California. Jansen advocates for veterans through projects like Paws for Purple Hearts and Wreaths Across America.

Tony Teravainen from Scripps Ranch served as Petty Officer First Class in the U.S. Navy. He co-founded Support The Enlisted Project (STEP), which provides financial support to military families. His efforts have been recognized with awards such as the Spirit of Hope Award from the Secretary of Defense.

In addition to honoring Jansen and Teravainen, Leader Jones recognized 16 other veterans as "Honored Veterans of Senate District 40." These individuals include Barry Bernstein, Alexander Buggy, Edward Michael Clancy, Glen Cook, John Drdek, Ed Embly, Mike Gardiner, Cory Gautereaux, Gary Harrison, Bennadine Johnson, Thomas Kilpela, Glenn Kunz, Al Lejarde, Jhon Londono, DuVal Warner, and Captain E. Royce Williams.
