San Diego County experienced a dynamic year in 2024, marked by significant events and developments. The County News Center reported extensively on these occurrences, keeping residents informed about the major issues.

The presidential elections were a focal point, with numerous updates from the County Registrar of Voters. Over 30 stories and videos were published regarding voter registration, voting locations, and election results. Notably, two popular stories detailed the placement of over 150 ballot drop-off boxes and the opening of more than 200 Vote Centers.

Severe weather impacted the region in January when torrential rains caused unprecedented flooding. The County responded with over 40 reports to assist affected residents. These included updates on emergency proclamations, damage assessments, assistance centers, sandbag distribution, hazardous waste collection, and recovery efforts.

Efforts to address homelessness and housing continued as priorities for San Diego County. The introduction of an affordable housing mapping tool and a program for first-time homebuyers were among the notable initiatives. New affordable housing developments opened applications for vulnerable groups in Escondido, San Marcos, and Vista. Additionally, senior housing projects commenced on excess county land.

Public health remained a concern with various warnings issued throughout the year. These included alerts about listeria in dairy products, measles cases related to travel, E. coli in walnuts, and illnesses from imported oysters. Dengue fever cases emerged locally for the first time due to invasive Aedes mosquitoes spreading the disease within the county.

A leadership change occurred as Ebony Shelton was appointed Chief Administrative Officer in June after serving as interim CAO since January. Shelton's appointment marked her as the first Afro-Latina to hold this position in San Diego County's history.

For further details on these topics and more updates throughout 2025, residents are encouraged to visit the County News Center website.
