Life has taken a positive turn for Earl Deshazer, a senior resident of San Diego, following his move to Levant Senior Cottages in Linda Vista. This community offers 127 units specifically designed for low-income seniors aged 55 and older, who earn between 25% and 50% of the Area Median Income.
Levant Senior Cottages is the first of eleven planned affordable housing communities on county land, developed by Wakeland Housing and Development. The project aims to create a comfortable living environment with social opportunities within walking distance, addressing issues of isolation often faced by seniors.
Earl expressed his joy at regaining independence after health issues left him unable to work and dependent on family for housing. "The relief and thrill of settling into his own home are a dream come true," he shared.
Since 2017, San Diego County has invested over $314 million in affordable housing through various funding sources. These efforts have resulted in more than 2,500 homes being made available, with an additional 3,100 homes expected soon.
