The soon-to-be-built Harbor Park, a part of the wider transformation of the existing Chula Vista Waterfront, has finally received a Coastal Development Permit (CDP) from the San Diego Board Port of Commissioners, according to a Port of San Diego Water Development press release.
Both Harbor Park and the recently approved Sweetwater Park will make up half of the total renovation project of the Chula Vista Waterfront.
Financing for the Harbor Park project is to be provided by the Gaylord Pacific Resort and Convention Center with initial construction beginning in early 2023 with a projected completion date of early 2024.
The preliminary budget for Harbor Park is $19.5 million with all other improvements totaling $28 million in a wider budget of $47.5 million. A timeline for project completion beyond initial phases has yet to be announced.
With a bigger and better beach, sunset terraces, added recreational offerings and more, Harbor Park is really where we envision visitors and Chula Vista residents spending a lot of their time on the Chula Vista Bayfront,” Chair Ann Moore, Chula Vista’s representative on the Board of Port Commissioners, said. “Harbor Park, along with the future Sweetwater Park and other public amenities, will give us the enhanced shoreline recreation and active commercial harbor we’ve been wanting in the South Bay.”
Phase one of the development will focus in on a few specific renovations on the northwest shoreline such as improving and enlarging beach space, pedestrian bicycle improvements as well as updates to address rising sea levels, to name a few.
Additional improvements have been laid out after the first phase, including the construction of a beach lawn, picnic grove, family restrooms as well as an interactive fountain.
The project as a whole is currently being conducting by the City of Chula Vista in partnership with the Port of San Diego.
