The San Diego Economic Development Corporation (EDC) said one of the key takeaways from the California Employment Development Department (EDD) employment data is that unemployment has fallen to 6.6%.

Other key takeaways are that San Diego retailers hired 1,800 employees for the holiday season and the report reminded consumers to shop local and wear masks.

The unemployment rate was down to 6.6% in November after it was 7.5% in October. Bostonia had the highest unemployment in the region at 12.4%, with National City trailing behind at 10.3%. Solano Beach has the lowest at 3.6%.

The unemployment rates are lower in the region than the state as a whole, which is sitting at 7.9%. The national average is currently 6.4%, the EDC reported.

"While unemployment continues to fall, much of the improvement can be attributed to government support," the report stated. "In fact, unemployment claims increased again this week showing as emergency aid has dried up—proof the local job market could once again backtrack in the coming months."

Total non-farm employment had increased by 14,300 in November, while trade, transportation and utilities added 8,200 jobs in November. Retail has still not picked back up and is still down 6,200 jobs.

Food services and drinking places lost 1,000 jobs last month, which was before mandatory closures started in December.

San Diego non-farm employment is down 97,700 from last year, which is 6.4%. The hospitality industry is down 35,300 jobs and accommodation is down 12,900 jobs. The food services industry is down 22,400.

Department stores have continued to decline by 19% since last year and 7.7% in the last month. Food services and drinking establishments declined 4% since last month and nearly 1% since last year. Clothing and clothing accessories dropped 16.1% since last year and 6.8% from last month.

November's retail numbers were worse than they were in April, the report states.
