The Board of Supervisors approved the donation of 75 acres of land next to El Capitan County Preserve, expanding the County’s Multiple Species Conservation Plan (MSCP) preserve to nearly 46,300 acres. According to County Parks Department officials, the new acreage will connect key areas and improve regional trail opportunities while protecting native habitats.
In regards to the land donation, an agreement was reached with Lakeside’s River Park Conservancy, with the land appraising at $1,500,000.
"The open space will support sustainability goals for species conservation," stated a County official.
The Department of Parks and Recreation considers various factors when acquiring open space land, such as biology, connectivity, accessibility, and value. This initiative aligns with the core mission of the Parks Department to positively impact public health, protect native habitats, and improve water and air quality for future generations.
