San Diego County Health officials have issued a warning regarding walnuts sold in local stores that are linked to a national E. coli outbreak. The Shiga toxin-producing E. coli found in the walnuts has already affected two individuals locally, with one person being hospitalized. County Public Health officials are urging people to discard any walnuts tied to the outbreak.

The majority of people affected by this multi-state outbreak reported consuming walnuts from Gibson Farms, prompting the company to issue a nationwide recall. The contaminated walnuts were sold in 10 local natural food stores and co-ops, both in bulk bins and repackaged for individual sale.

County Public Health Officer Wilma J. Wooten emphasized the severity of the situation, stating, "If you or a loved one are feeling sick, contact your doctor as soon as possible." E. coli symptoms can include severe stomach cramps, diarrhea, and vomiting, often appearing within a few days of consumption. Wooten highlighted the potential complications of E. coli, such as serious kidney problems that may require hospitalization.

The County has been proactive in working with the affected stores to ensure the removal of the contaminated walnuts from shelves. Individuals who have purchased these walnuts are advised to dispose of them immediately and thoroughly clean any containers or surfaces that may have come in contact with the product.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has also reported illnesses linked to the recalled walnuts in Washington state. This serves as a reminder of the importance of food safety and the swift response required in such situations to prevent further illness and complications.
