San Diego County has introduced a new technology aimed at improving the evacuation process during emergencies. The Genasys EVAC technology, launched on Wednesday, will enable emergency managers and dispatchers to send out more precise location-based alerts.
Developed by a coalition of local emergency managers, law enforcement and fire officials, and other safety experts, the evacuation zones utilize geo boundaries such as lakes, freeways, mountains, and neighborhoods to create more logical mapping zones. This updated mapping aims to provide specific evacuation areas to limit unnecessary evacuations and support efficient repopulations.
Genasys EVAC will be integrated into AlertSanDiego.org and the SD Emergency app. Residents who are already registered do not need to resubscribe or download anything new to receive emergency alerts.
Agencies throughout San Diego County will use this technology as part of regional efforts to innovate and adopt best practices for keeping residents safe during emergencies. With peak fire conditions ahead, regional fire and safety officials gathered on Wednesday to promote the Genasys EVAC launch and encourage residents to stay prepared.
Officials urge residents to register for emergency alerts through AlertSanDiego.org and the SD Emergency app for information about evacuations, road closures, emergency shelters, and more. Additionally, they emphasize taking precautions against increased fire risks.
