San Diego County News Center reported that while there are numerous hiking trails available to residents and visitors in San Diego County, the heat can pose significant dangers. Over the weekend, a 50-year-old woman died after separating from her group and hiking alone in Black Mountain Open Space Park in San Diego.

The County frequently closes parks in remote areas due to excessive heat to protect hikers. However, heat can be a concern on any trail. CAL FIRE/San Diego County firefighters and sheriff’s deputies are often called to rescue individuals who have become ill or injured during hikes. So far in 2024, CAL FIRE/San Diego County Fire has responded to 50 hiker rescue or aid calls, though not all were related to heat.

CAL FIRE/San Diego County Fire Capt. Brent Pascua advises less experienced hikers to avoid hiking during the hottest parts of the day. He recommends heading out early before it gets hot or later when it starts cooling off. Additionally, he provided several safety tips for preparing for hikes in warm weather.
