County Fire/CAL FIRE have initiated efforts to protect homes in the Dulzura area as part of the California Wildfire Mitigation Program. The program aims to provide defensible space and home retrofits to enhance protection against wildfires. In many instances, this work is offered at no cost to homeowners, targeting high social vulnerability communities and assisting qualifying low- and moderate-income households.

At one residence, contractors removed trees and brush adjacent to the home to create defensible space. Subsequently, construction contractors replaced combustible materials such as untreated wood trim, a wood deck, nylon window screens, and vents in the foundation and roof to further safeguard the home from wildfires and embers.

The pilot program is funded by a grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES). Interested parties can apply via the County's website.
