San Diego County Probation has announced the promotion of Tabatha Wilburn to assistant chief, following the retirement of Denise Huffhines. Wilburn, a 23-year veteran of the department, was previously serving as a deputy chief.
Probation Chief Tamika Nelson commented on the promotion, stating, "Tabatha Wilburn has been an inspirational, compassionate, and knowledgeable officer for the department for over 23 years." Nelson further highlighted Wilburn's expertise in both juvenile and adult justice systems as critical to advancing the department's approach toward clients in San Diego County. She added that Wilburn will be instrumental in achieving their vision of enhancing community safety through restoration and rehabilitation.
In her role as deputy chief, Wilburn managed operations within Youth Development Community Support Services. Her responsibilities included overseeing 150 staff members and managing an operating budget. Additionally, she played a significant role in financial planning related to Juvenile Justice Realignment and led several projects such as Ending Girls Incarceration and the Indian Child Welfare Act MOU with the Tribal Council. Her contributions were vital during the transition following the state closure of the Department of Juvenile Justice.
Wilburn holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice and a master's degree in public administration with a focus on leadership. Her career also includes service in the United States Marine Corps and as a police officer in Georgia.
