San Diego County News Center - A new community of 73 apartment homes for seniors experiencing homelessness or at risk of becoming homeless celebrated its grand opening in South Bay. Nestor Senior Village, developed by National CORE, offers studio apartments for older adults aged 55 and up, who are making 30-percent or less of the area median income. About half of the apartments are reserved for individuals in need of mental health services through the County’s No Place Like Home program.
Nestor Senior Village, built on surplus land owned by the Nestor United Methodist Church, provides shared amenities with the church, including outdoor recreation space and a food pantry. The facility also includes a courtyard with outdoor seating, a community room, a laundry room, private offices for case management, and 34 parking spots.
David Estrella, director of the County’s Housing and Community Development Services department, highlighted the significance of such initiatives, stating, "San Diego’s high cost of housing has resulted in a growing number of seniors experiencing homelessness. Investments and partnerships like this are a critical part of the County’s commitment to provide the housing, and stability it can bring, to our most vulnerable older adults."
Nestor Senior Village is strategically located within walking distance to essential amenities such as grocery stores, pharmacies, a park, and the Nestor Community Health Center. Additionally, it is conveniently situated near two bus stops and the trolley, enhancing accessibility for the residents.
The establishment of Nestor Senior Village aligns with the County’s Housing Blueprint, serving as a response to the regional housing crisis. Since 2017, the County has invested over $305 million in affordable housing, resulting in the opening of more than 2,100 units, with an additional 3,286 units in progress. Once completed, the total number of affordable units supported by the County is expected to exceed 9,500, providing homes for nearly 21,000 individuals.
In conclusion, the unveiling of Nestor Senior Village signifies a step towards addressing housing insecurity among vulnerable older adults in the South Bay region, reflecting the County's ongoing commitment to affordable housing initiatives.
