San Diego County is encouraging residents to focus on their mental health with the annual Check Your Mood Day, coinciding with National Depression Screening Day. This event takes place during Mental Illness Awareness Week and aims to promote awareness about mental well-being.
Luke Bergmann, Ph.D., director of the County Behavioral Health Services, emphasized the importance of mental health checks. "Checking in on your mental health is just as important as getting your blood pressure checked or seeing your doctor for an annual physical," he stated. He highlighted that this day serves as a reminder of the critical role mental health plays in overall wellness.
Statistics from the Department of Health and Human Services indicate that one in five adults in the United States experiences a mental illness annually. Despite its prevalence, many individuals are unaware they may be dealing with a mental illness or choose not to seek help due to stigma.
Symptoms of depression can include low energy, sadness, loss of interest in previously enjoyable activities, and sleep disturbances. San Diego County offers resources like a 30-Day Mental Wellness Practice to support those facing these challenges. This initiative encourages daily self-care activities such as establishing a nighttime routine or engaging in digital detoxes.
For immediate assistance, residents can contact the San Diego Access and Crisis Line at 1-888-724-7240 or 988 for support available around the clock in over 200 languages. Additionally, websites like Up2SD.org and OwnYourMindset.org provide further resources for managing mental health.
