National Prescription Drug Take Back Day is set for this Saturday, and San Diego County officials are urging residents to dispose of their unused and expired medications at designated drop-off locations. The event aims to prevent misuse, accidental poisoning, and the diversion of drugs into illegal markets.
In 2022, opioid overdoses claimed the lives of 857 individuals in San Diego County, marking a significant increase of approximately 115% since 2016. Proper disposal of prescription drugs is crucial in combating this issue.
The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has identified over 25 locations across the county where residents can safely discard unwanted medications. Among these are facilities operated by the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office, which will accept drop-offs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Residents are reminded that safe disposal options are available year-round. More than 200 sites throughout San Diego County provide ongoing opportunities to dispose of medications responsibly. Information on these sites can be found on the DEA’s Every Day is Take Back Day website or through the county's interactive map.
This initiative coincides with the DEA’s annual Red Ribbon Week, running until October 31, which focuses on raising awareness about drug prevention.
For those seeking substance use treatment resources and support services, assistance is available through the San Diego Access and Crisis Line at 888-724-7240 or by dialing 988. These services operate around the clock and offer help in over 150 languages.
