Senate Minority Leader Brian W. Jones has expressed disapproval of Governor Newsom's decision to combine two special sessions: one focused on suing the Trump Administration and another addressing Los Angeles wildfire relief.
Jones stated, "I’m encouraged that Governor Newsom heard our calls to take action on the LA wildfires in a special session." However, he criticized the merging of these sessions as "unnecessary" and "insulting to those struggling through this disaster." He emphasized that fire victims deserve a response that is respectful and non-partisan, but accused Newsom of politicizing the crisis.
Jones suggested an alternative approach: convening a new special session solely dedicated to investigating the LA fires, supporting recovery efforts, and preparing for future disasters. Despite his criticisms, Jones affirmed that Republicans are committed to collaborating with Democrats to secure wildfire relief and deliver solutions for Californians.
Governor Newsom's decision follows Republican lawmakers' calls for a special session addressing the wildfires' impacts and California’s insurance market instability.
